Welcome to the Lunch Buddies section of Table and Fire!

IBC Lunch Buddies are a great "tribe" of people. The hard thing about our tribe is that we don't necessarily see each other regularly. Our contact with with our students, and perhaps we don't feel connected to others who are doing the same thing.

This forum is designed for us to share successes and problems--as a place to get advice and give it--and as a place where we can get a sense of community-- and know that we are united with others doing the same thing--building into at-risk students--making a difference in their lives--speaking wisdom and experience into their lives and problems.

Remember - - - "100 years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the type of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove, but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child."

Looking forward to "doing life" together through this site!

OK

I'll start off the blog with a couple of tips I learned last year in my 1st year as a lunch buddy.

The Quiet Kid: My buddy was very shy and reluctant to talk when we first met. Part of this was his nature and part was probably intimidation with me or the process. As we got lunch one day, he said hi to a friend who was obviously a talker so I invited him along also. With his buddy along it made him feel more at ease and he started talking.

What do you talk about: This I picked up from another Lunch Buddy who I believe is named Christi. She recommended using a question card pack that you can get from a Hallmark store. You can also get the Book of Questions for Children book. Collectively they offer some good moral, ethical, common sense, and humerous questions. These work good to start conversation and help allow you to lend guidance on making quality decsions.

Hope this helps someone. Now everybody let's hear some of your tips and traps.

Thanks, Bill, for taking the time to give that wise advice. Both observations were very helpful. I appreciate your getting us started!
